Member Update:
COVID-19 Situation- May 27th
Dear ,

We've seen ongoing coverage about the conditions in five long term care homes across Ontario, higlighting issues that nurses have been raising the alarm about for years. Today the government announced it would be taking over management of the five homes in the report.

Since this news broke yesterday, many nurses have reached out to share stories about how they have been calling attention to these systemic issues for a long time and have been frustrated to see little action. Other nurses have written to express their concern that this news unfairly paints all long term care facilities with the same brush, failing to recognize that the majority of Ontario's 630 facilities have been doing incredible work to keep residents safe during this pandemic.

We know that nurses across all corners of the province are doing amazing work to keep residents safe and it is a very small number of facilities facing these extreme challenges. In fact, in his daily press conference, the Premier applauded the work that health professionals are doing in LTC.

At the same time, we know that there remain systemic problems across our LTC system. It's horrible and tragic that it's taken a crisis like this to get the public and government attention to concerns you have been raising for a long time. But, now that we have that attention, you can be sure that we will be actively advocating for meaningful change to protect the safety and well-being of residents and those that care for them. The government has announced plans for an Indepedent Commission into LTC and we will be at the forefront advocating there on your behalf. We will keep you posted as this work unfolds.

Key Provincial Updates and Resources for Health Professionals
Today, in addition to the above noted announcement on LTC, the province extended existing emergency orders until June 9.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health's Directive #2 has been amended to reflect the gradual restart of all deferred and non-essential and elective services carried out by health care providers.

An accompanying document, COVID-19 Operational Requirements: Health Sector Restart, has also been developed to outline measures that must be in place for the provision of in-person health services by health care providers. A reminder that health care providers must also adhere to guidance provided by their applicable health regulatory college.

The Ministry is also reminding the sector about Ontario Health's framework as per its May 7, 2020 document: A Measured Approach to Planning for Surgeries and Procedures During the COVID-19 Pandemic
for hospitals to assess their readiness and begin planning for the gradual resumption of scheduled surgeries and procedures, while maintaining capacity to respond to COVID-19.
