COVID-19 Situation- May 8th
Dear ,

In honour of Mental Health Week, we wanted to close out this week's newsletters by sharing some additional resources to support your mental health during this time:

  • BounceBack, an Ontario mental health program offers free, guided self-help program to help those dealing with mild to moderate anxiety or depression, or may be feeling low, stressed, worried, irritable or angry.
  • This Coping Calendar offer 30 actions to help you look after yourself and others during this difficult time.
  • Pause 4 Providers is offering nightly 30-minute drop-in mindfulness sessions. Designed and led by and for other healthcare professionals, each session offers short mindfulness practices to help find calm in the midst of challenge. Check out this flyer for more details.

Key Provincial Updates and Resources for Health Professionals
Today, Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Finance Rod Phillips reacted to the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey data released today, which demonstrates that 689,000 jobs were lost in Ontario in the month of April. They re-announced that a number of Ontario businesses will be permitted to reopen in the coming days, meaning thousands of Ontarians will be able to resume working.

Key Federal Updates
Today, Statistics Canada released the jobs report for April that showed that Canada lost 2M jobs in April.

The Prime Minister also announced that the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy will be extended beyond June to "help kick start economic reopening and boost jobs." More will be announced next week.

The Minister of Heritage also revealed details of $500M earmarked for arts, culture and sport

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry also announced the creation of new Industry Strategy Council, to assess the scope and depth of COVID-19's impact on industries and inform government's understanding of specific sectoral pressures.

Daily Reports
As of 10:30AM today, Ontario reported 19,598 confirmed cases (increase of 477), 13,990 resolved cases, 1,540 deaths and 14,641 currently under investigation with lab results pending.

The Ministry is also reporting that 1,028 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19, 213 are in ICU and 166 are vented. To view these additional details: click here
