Member Update:
COVID-19 Situation- May 20
Dear ,

Today, Ontario's Science Advisory Table released updated modelling. Key findings included:
  • Cases, positivity and hospitalization rates are decreasing.
  • Control of the pandemic is improving due to current public health measures and the efforts of Ontarians.
  • The access to care deficit continues but high-priority surgeries are being performed at higher rates.
  • Maintaining progress on vaccinations and maintaining some public health measures until mid-June can help ensure a good summer:
    • School re-opening will create an increase in cases, but this may be manageable.
    • Outdoor activities are much safer than indoor activities and should be encouraged.

Key Provincial Updates and Resources for Health Professionals
Today, Ontario released its Three-Step Roadmap to Safely Reopen the Province. The plan outlines three steps to easing public health measures, guided by the following principles:
  • Step One An initial focus on resuming outdoor activities with smaller crowds where the risk of transmission is lower, and permitting retail with restrictions. This includes allowing outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people, outdoor dining with up to four people per table and non-essential retail at 15 per cent capacity.
  • Step Two Further expanding outdoor activities and resuming limited indoor services with small numbers of people where face coverings are worn. This includes outdoor gatherings of up to 25 people, outdoor sports and leagues, personal care services where face coverings can be worn and with capacity limits, as well as indoor religious services, rites or ceremony gatherings at 15 per cent capacity.
  • Step Three Expanding access to indoor settings, with restrictions, including where there are larger numbers of people and where face coverings can’t always be worn. This includes indoor sports and recreational fitness; indoor dining, museums, art galleries and libraries, and casinos and bingo halls, with capacity limits.

Yesterday, Chief Medical Officer of Health released a Memorandum on the Revocation of Directive #2 and the ammended Ontario Health memo Gradual resumption of non-emergent and non-urgent surgeries and procedures.

Yesterday, the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table published a new brief entitled Excess Mortality in Ontario During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Based on Ontario cremation data, there has been a 12.8% increase in the number of deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to the expected numbers of deaths informed by previous years’ cremation data. The causes of these excess deaths include infection with SARS-CoV-2, as well as causes likely related to the pandemic but not due to COVID-19 itself.

Tuesday, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced an investment of $199.16 million in Resilience Biotechnologies Inc. This investment will support a $401.52-million project that will help develop Canada’s medical countermeasures to COVID-19 and strengthen Canada’s emergency preparedness for future pandemics.

On Monday, the Ontario government announced as of 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, individuals aged 18 and over in 2021 across Ontario will be eligible to book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment through the provincial booking system and call centre, or directly through public health units that use their own booking system.

As of Tuesday, May 18, 2021, public health units may choose to provide vaccines to those aged 12 and over in pop-up and mobile clinics, as well as for walk-in appointments where the Pfizer vaccine is offered. This will include First Nations, Inuit and Métis clinics that offer the Pfizer vaccine. There will also be dedicated clinic times for youth during the weeks of June 14 and 21, 2021.
