Member Update:
COVID-19 Situation- March 18th
Dear ,

Yesterday, Ontario marked the year anniversary since the declaration of a state of emergency. In recognition of this date, the Minister of Health offered a special tribute to health professionals. Watch here

Earlier this week, WeRPN joined the province's newly
established Staffing Supply Accelerator Group, to support the government’s goal of increasing long-term care staffing supply by expanding and accelerating education and training for RPNs, RNs and PSWs. WeRPN looks forward to adding our voice to this important work to help achieve the government's goal of increasing the hours of direct care for each long-term care resident to an average of four hours per day.

Key Provincial Updates and Resources for Health Professionals
Today, the government announced it is investing $933 million in 80 new long-term care projects, which will lead to thousands of additional new and upgraded long-term care spaces across the province. These projects will add 7,510 new spaces and upgrade 4,197 spaces, and provide new spaces for Indigenous, Francophone and other cultural community residents.

The government also announced that they will be moving Ottawa Public Health region to the Red-Control level in the Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework.

This afternoon, the government announced it will invest $239 million to extend temporary wage enhancements for personal support workers and direct support workers in publicly funded home and community care, long-term care, public hospitals, and social services sectors until June 30, 2021.

Yesterday, Ontario announced measures to make it easier for businesses to administer rapid COVID-19 tests in the workplace. Based on the success of the initial deployment of rapid antigen testing, the province is also expanding this program to additional sectors, including first responders, emergency medical services, trucking and transportation, wastewater management, and post-secondary institutions.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Christine Elliott, also issued orders under the Connecting Care Act to transfer the Trillium Gift of Life Network and non-patient care functions from the Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) to Ontario Health. The transfers are part of the government’s efforts to build an integrated and connected health care system, and will take effect on April 1st. Following the transfer, LHINs will be renamed “Home and Community Care Support Services,” to reflect a singular mandate to deliver patient care.
