COVID-19 Situation- October 8th

Over the past several weeks, there have been a number of announcements that directly impact RPNs. Upcoming Event for RPNs
On behalf of Sinai Health System and the University Health Network, we want to share that registration is now open for the 8th Annual Toronto Geriatrics Virtual Update Course – Providing Excellent Geriatric Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic. The course is taking place on Friday October 30th via a ZOOM Webinar/Meeting Format.

This annual Geriatrics Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Course has been designed to provide front-line practitioners with the latest practical and evidence-based knowledge they need to better manage the care of their older patients, including a specific focus on topics around infectious diseases and its impact on the delivery of care for a vulnerable older patient population.

Key Provincial Updates and Resources for Health Professionals
The province announced it has hired Dr. Joshua Tepper as Education Health Advisor to support the safe reopening of schools.

The Government has updated the latest version of Directive #5 to include an update in the list of Aerosol Generating Medical Procedures. They have also developed a Q&A on Directive #5

Yesterday, the Government announced it would be providing an additional $176 million this year to help expand access for critical mental health and addictions supports during COVID-19. The investment is part of the government’s commitment to spend $3.8 billion on mental health supports over 10 years. This announcement will help address urgent gaps in care, enhance access to services, create new supports and expand programs in priority areas. The investment will support:

  • Community-based services in English and French, including services for children and youth;
  • Mental health and justice services;
  • Supportive housing for individuals with serious mental health and addiction challenges, and who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless;
  • Increased supports for Indigenous peoples, families, and communities;
  • More hospital in-patient beds for mental health and addiction patients;

Key Federal Updates
Today, Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, announced their commitment to invest $295 million each to retool Ford Company of Canada's Oakville Assembly Complex into a global hub for battery electric vehicle production This will help secure 5,400 well-paying middle class jobs across Ford’s production workforce in Canada and grow our green economy, especially in Southern Ontario where thousands of Canadians are employed across the auto supply chain.

Daily Reports
As of 10:30AM today, Ontario reported 56,742 confirmed cases (increase of 797),
48,308 resolved cases, 2,992 deaths and 58,118 currently under investigation with lab results pending.

The Ministry is also reporting that 206 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19, 47 are in ICU and 29 are vented.
