Key Provincial Updates and Resources for Health Professionals

Yesterday, the Ontario government announced an investment of $294,000 from the Ontario Together Fund in North Bay-based New Ontario Brewing Co. This investment will enable the local brewery to retool its facility in order to produce more than 100,000 litres of hand sanitizer for hospitals, pharmacies, and grocers in the area.

Late last week, the provincial government also eased certain COVID-19 restrictions for meeting and event facilities, as well as for bars and restaurants.
  • For meeting and event facilities, up to 50 guests are now permitted for each indoor meeting room or event space contained within the facility. This is up from the previous capacity limit of 50 guests for the entire facility and applies to space rentals within convention centres, hotels, motels, resorts, banquet halls, and conference centres. The capacity limit does not include venue staff or event personnel.
  • For bars and restaurants, contact information is now only required to be collected for one person per party for contact tracing purposes. Previously, this information was required for all patrons at bars, restaurants, and other food and drink establishments.

For more information, we encourage you to visit the Government of Ontario and Public Health Ontario websites.

Key Federal Updates

Over the weekend, Erin O’Toole, Member of Parliament for Durham, was elected the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. O’Toole’s platform included a commitment to balancing Canada’s budget while winding down emergency COVID-19 benefits such as the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). On healthcare, O’Toole would prioritize augmenting the international recruitment of healthcare workers and reducing Canada’s reliance on other countries for critical supplies such as pharmaceuticals and personal protective equipment. He has also committed to convening a Royal Commission on the Pandemic to make public lessons learned from the COVID-19 crisis and to ensure that Canada is better prepared in the future.

On August 21st, the federal government, in partnership with the Government of Ontario and 3M Canada, announced a joint investment to expand 3M Canada’s manufacturing facility for N95 respirators in Brockville, Ontario. The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario will each contribute $23.33 million, and will each be supplied with 25 million N95 respirators per year from the facility, over the next five years.

On August 20th, the federal government announced an extension of CERB for an additional four weeks, and a plan to transition the millions of Canadians still claiming this benefit to a revamped Employment Insurance program beginning on September 27th. The federal government will also extend the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) by four weeks, to enable businesses to continue to keep furloughed workers on their payroll.
