Key Provincial Updates and Resources for Health Professionals
The government has extended emergency orders currently in force under the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act, 2020 until the September 22, 2020. This would include orders that limit health professionals to working in one Long Term Care or Retirement Home facility.

Today, the government announced they will be hiring an additional 200 provincial police officers.

Yesterday, the government announced an investment of $149,200 from the Ontario Together Fund in physician scheduling technology created by Ontario-based MetricAid. This scheduling solution helps physicians link their availability and expertise with needed hospitals and clinics. This will enable MetricAid to scale up its scheduling software, including by expanding its range of service to support nursing homes. The technology will help distribute shifts and hours to ensure the needs of doctors, patients and clinics are met.

The government also announced their intent to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to advance tunnelling work on the Eglinton Crosstown West Light Rail Transit (LRT) Extension. The RFP is expected to be issued today, August 20th, and the tunnelling contract is expected to be awarded in mid-2021.

Key Federal Updates
Today, the government announced changes to the Employment Insurance (EI) program and new income support benefits that will better support all Canadians. They also announced that in preparation for this transition and to ensure support continues for Canadians whose employment has been impacted by the pandemic, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) will be extended by an additional four weeks to a maximum of 28 weeks. This means that for the many Canadians expecting to exhaust their CERB benefits at the end of August, they will now be able to access an additional month of support. More details available here

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister appointed Chrystia Freeland to the role of Minister of Finance, while keeping her role as Deputy Prime Minister, and Dominic LeBlanc to the role of Minister of Intergovernment Relations.

The Prime Minister also asked Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, to prorogue Parliament. This will provide an opportunity to present a Speech from the Throne on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, the same week the House of Commons was previously scheduled to return.
