COVID-19 Situation- August 18th

Key Provincial Updates and Resources for Health Professionals
This afternoon, the government announced they are moving ahead with the Scarborough subway.

Last week, Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, Lisa MacLeod, announced that capacity restrictions on sport, fitness and recreation facilities would be further relaxed, effective August 15 at 12:01 a.m.  These facilities will be permitted to have up to 50 patrons for each indoor sport and fitness room, while ensuring physical distancing of at least two metres. They also announced an investment of $8 million to ensure the safe return of amateur sports.

Key Federal Updates
Yesterday, Canada's Finance Minister Bill Morneau resigned from Cabinet and his MP seat in Toronto Centre. The Prime Minister has chosen Chrystia Freeland, the current Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs to take on the role of Minister of Finance- the first female to assume this role in Canadian history.

Last week, the Government released updated modelling that suggests we could see a peak of cases in early fall.

Last week, Infrastructure Minister Catherine McKenna announced that the federal government is offering $31 million to help communities find ways to adapt to the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Minister says money could be used for everything from making it easier to physically distance on playgrounds to building apps so people can access government services from a distance.

Daily Reports
As of 10:30AM today, Ontario reported 40,870 confirmed cases (increase of 125),
37,126 resolved cases, 2,793 deaths and 16,128 currently under investigation with lab results pending.

The Ministry is also reporting that 41 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19, 15 are in ICU and 10 are vented. To view these additional details: click here
